Object: T-Shirt
4 different angles of the T-shirt
The T-shirt is made of sustainable cotton. With the front being simple, just the text of the cloths' brand, meanwhile, there is a graphic of a mermaid, yin yang, and sun with the cool font of the logo as well on the top of the shirt. I will redesign this T-shirt to something that is up to her preference and useful for her based on the results of my ethnographic research.
Observing Research
My Sister's object inventory which includes ; phone, mug, bag, water bottle, sunglasses, comb, hairclip, wallet, cap, earbuds, USB, sunscreen, pencil case, music CD, adaptor, hairtie, history of graphic design book, bowl, iPad, candle, vase, shuttlecock, hand sanitiser, perfume, mouse, mint candy.
From what we can examine from her personal object inventory, she likes vibrant and colourful items; however, she prefers to have monochromatic colours for her daily essential objects, such as her bag and hair clip. She is the type of person who enjoys going out since most of her stuff is needed when she’s traveling to some places. She is passionate about design and history, considering that she has a book about the history of graphic design and the collage on her iPad case. She loves listening to music and seeing that she uses earbuds and the Harry Styles album CD, it can also be assumed that she likes Harry Styles music. One of her hobbies is playing badminton, which can be proven by her possession of a shuttlecock.
Moreover, she has long hair due to the hair tie and hairclip. She has an admiration for weird, funky, and eccentric stuff, as indicated by most of her belongings, especially the bitter melon pencil case. I can assume that she is a student based on the fact that she has an iPad that can be used to draw or take notes, a USB to store data, and a mouse that she uses to navigate her laptop. Furthermore, perfume and candles are evidence of her fondness for aromatics. She also loves to eat sweet treats, as she has candy with her.
I can conclude that her needs are something that can be useful throughout her daily life or something that she can put in her living space. The capabilities are something that she can use easily without needing any instructions for them. The behaviour will be something that doesn’t really influence her daily habits. My opinion is that she is a neat person. Her taste in objects is something that is funky, catchy, and aesthetic; she prefers having things that are aesthetically pleasing rather than functional, for example, her flower vase.
Engaging Research

M: Why do you like this shirt in particular?
S: I like it because it was the first shirt that I bought with my own money. The reason I bought it was because I thought the design was cool.
M: What makes this shirt special and appealing to you?
S: The shirt has a good material that I like, as well as the graphics on the T-shirt.
M: If you had to rate this shirt out of 10, what would you give?
S: I will rate it 9 out of 10 because it is not a long-sleeve shirt and the length of the shirt is long, so I like it.
M: How often do you wear this T-shirt?
S: I usually wear them twice a week.
M: Why do you want to redesign the T-shirt?
S: It is because I’m starting to get bored with the shirt since I often wear it, but I don’t want to throw it away, and I think it deserves a second life being redesigned as a reminder of my first ever bought things, which are special to me.
M: What do you feel when you wear this T-shirt?
S: When I wear this T-shirt, I feel comfy because of the material.
M: How do you feel when you see this T-shirt?
S: It gives me a feeling of pride, and it also motivates me to work even harder.
M: Are there any items that you currently need or want?
S: I think, right now, I need something that can cover up my lamp because my current night lamp is very bright, and it bothers me so much at night.
Things that I can find from the engaging research are that this T-shirt is meaningful to her, but she started to get bored with it as she wore them quite often. Not only that, but she likes this T-shirt because of the graphics, and it also feels comfy when she wears it because of the material. Moreover, she feels proud of herself when she sees the T-shirt, which gives her a sense of achievement. Furthermore, she told me that she needs a lampshade currently.
Immersing Research
Me and my sister go shopping together. She usually loves to try on clothes, especially oversized tees that have a graphic on them. I also noticed that she loves to look at the accessories in each store. I remember once, she saw this cute baguette bag, but she didn’t buy it because it was expensive for her at the time. She also found this earring that has a cow getting taken by a UFO. I thought it looked weird, but apparently, she thought it was cute.
We both went to the Harry Styles concert because we are fans of his. I remember my sister wearing a grey Harley-Davidson shirt that has a graphic in the back of the shirt pair with a blue ripped jean, a white grid hat, and a love-shaped orange glass. She also wore a black vending pack as her bag. When we arrived at the venue, we both bought Harry Styles merchandise. After that, we started going to the gate door and started sitting down until the gate was open. After the gate opened, we went directly to the inside of the venue. Luckily, we got to stand near the barricade. We really enjoyed our time there, singing along with the crowd and having the best time of our lives there.
We also went to the arts and crafts store because she needed to buy materials for her school project while I needed to buy needles for my sewing machine. After we got all that we needed, we stopped at the fabric aisle, and she immediately said that she wanted to buy a 60s flower pattern fabric to make as a bandana and checkered fabric coloured beige and chocolate orange, and she did buy both of them.
Besides that, we went to the Beauty and the Beast musical. We got there on time, so when we had just settled into our seats, the show started. My sister said that she was getting a bit bored because she already knew how the story went. On the other hand, I thought that it was really fun to watch the musical because there is still a difference between the film and the musical, like the songs. But still, we are both really amazed by the stage performance and the design, especially the be our guest part.
More recently, we went to Target to buy a vacuum cleaner, but when we just entered the store, she immediately caught her eye on the display of the wine glass that has a pink colour. She thought that it looked aesthetically pleasing and could be put on display on one of the racks in our apartment, but she didn’t end up buying it because there weren’t enough spaces to put the glass on. Not only that, but she also saw a bouquet of roses and lilies, and she said that it looked beautiful and that the smell was so nice.
From the immersing research, I can conclude that she likes listening to pop music and watching concerts. Buying and looking for weird and cute accessories is something that she fancies. She admires catchy and vibrant colours, such as home decorations or artwork that can be put in her living space. She liked unusual and unique items. She loves to wear T-shirts with graphics for her everyday fashion. She desires 1960s types of design. She doesn’t enjoy watching something for which she already knows the plot and storyline, so from there, I know that I shouldn’t redesign her object into something ordinary. Additionally, she finds her love for flowers and admires their beauty and smell. Her taste in things is uncommon, aesthetically pleasing, and appealing to her eyes. If I want to buy her a gift, I will buy her a weird-shaped candle like a meat bun with a steamer as the packaging so she can use and display it.

This object fits her well, as we recall that she likes flowers and would like something that can be displayed in her living space.
Ideation sketch 2 - Lamp Shades
Lamp shades will be useful for her since, in the interview, she said that she needs a lamp shade. This lampshade is not only useful, but it also suits her because it is 60s-themed.

She might like this earring as she likes accessories, and they are funky retro styles, but they are still cute.

This cute accessory can be perfect for her as it is useful to protect her earbuds and will have the look and feel like a plushie.

Since she is a neat person, she can use this tray to compile all of her accessories in one place. Moreover, it’s aesthetic, and it can be put anywhere she likes.
Ideation Sketch 6 - Butterfly Handbag
She once saw what looked like a baguette bag but ended up not buying it, so this object might be perfect for her as a redemption. Not only that, but this bag also fits really well with her style, as she usually only wears monochrome colours, and this bag will be a grey colour, the same colour as the T-shirt with the graphic on the back of the T-shirt as the pattern on the wings.

She chose the first one (great quality and timeless) as her most favourite because of the layout, colour, which hints at weirdness, especially with the cat. She chooses the last one as her least favourite because it’s not too wild and weird.

Hi everyone! In this short video, I will tell you about my sister’s T-shirt that I redesigned as a lily’s statue.
It is made up of resin and cut out of the T-shirt itself.
She is suitable for this object because, based on the research, she cares more about aesthetics than functionality,
and she can also display it in her living space.
The collage is the shape of a mermaid since the graphic on the T-shirt is a mermaid
and a little flower in the person’s head to make it relate to the redesigned object.
